Certus Projects were contracted to design and construct the Bedwin Road Cycleway & Cable bridge cable crossings as part of the TransGrid Powering Sydney’s Future project. The project is located within the Inner West Council local government area.
The works involve the design and construction of a three span cable bridge incorporating a cycleway over prestressed precast bridge spans, parallel to Bedwin Road bridge. The bridge crosses over the four Illawarra train lines operated by Sydney train and one the Sydney Metro line.
Abutment A is located over the metro tunnels and in close vicinity to a sewer line, high pressure gas, existing high voltage cable, overhead power lines and stormwater infrastructure. The project will also form part of the Inner West Council cycling network linking the newly constructed dedicated cycling facilities on Campbell Street and Edgeware Road.
The project is 103 metres long, with precast beams measuring 84.5 metres long and a clear width of 3 metres.
The Bridge has been designed and constructed over the T3 Illawarra Train lines, the New Sydney Metro Shunt Track. Abutment B sits on top of the new Sydney Metro Underground Tunnels. The bridge has a vertical clearance of approximately 5.3 metres to Sydney Trains tracks, and a lateral clearance of approximately 4.1 metres to track.
Span 1 is over Railway Parade Edgeware Road. Span 2 is over the Sydney Metro Southwest shunt track and, the Illawarra main and local lines. It is designed to accommodate the low-level clearance over the existing and future proven overhead wiring. Span 3 is over an embankment adjacent to the new WestConnex retaining wall along Bedwin Road.
The bridge is constructed from concrete beam girders with voids to allow for 330Kv transmission cabling to be incorporated into the design. The bridge will be a publicly accessible cycleway bridge operated and maintained by the Inner West Council.
Key features of the project include:
- Design & Approval Interface
- Sydney Trains CCB(Configuration Control Board) Process
- Sydney Metro Sub NAC(Assurance) Process
- ASA(Asset Standards Authority) Concession
- Major Design & Construction Interface
- Construction of Abutment A over Sydney Metro Tunnels
- Construction of Abutment B
- Approval Authorities
- Detailed Coordination
- Specialised Contractors
- Major Dual Crane Lifts
- Access & Egress to construct on extremely congested Road & Rail network
